A man suspected in the death of an off-duty Kansas City firefighter Thursday afternoon has been charged in federal court with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri said in a news release that Ja’Von L. Taylor, 23, was charged Friday in a criminal complaint.
Taylor remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing.According to an affidavit, Independence police were called about 2:30 p.m. on a reported shooting at a convenience store.
Federal investigators said surveillance videos showed Taylor returning to his vehicle after becoming very agitated inside the business.
Security video also showed Taylor and the victim fighting over an item that Taylor was holding, which was a firearm with an extended magazine, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
At one point, the female passenger with Taylor got the firearm and fires a round, appearing to strike the victim in the back, according to the news release.
The off-duty firefighter died from his injuries. Independence police identified him as Anthony Santi, 41.
