Griffin was a native of Chicago, Illinois, and attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he studied communications.
He began his career at WICD-TV in Illinois, before stints in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Washington, D.C.
He then worked as an investigative reporter for CBS 2 News in Los Angeles for 10 years. He joined CNN in May 2004.
